Bakani disease is making aromatic rice sick. Due to this disease, a 30 to 40 percent decline in Basmati production has been recorded in the last ten years. This has been revealed in a research done by Prof. Mujibur Rahman Khan, Head of the Plant Protection Department of AMU. According to his report, this disease has a greater effect on Basmati rice varieties 1121, 1509 and 1692 in Aligarh as well as Bareilly, Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad, Hathras, Kasganj, Mathura, Meerut, Moradabad, Rampur, Saharanpur.

Uttar Pradesh has a large area of Basmati rice. Along with Aligarh, farmers cultivate Basmati on a large scale in Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Moradabad, Amroha, Sambhal, Bulandshahr, Meerut and Saharanpur. Agriculture officers say that the production was 40 to 45 quintals per hectare. But for the last ten years, Basmati is in the grip of Bakani disease. Due to which the yield is also getting affected rapidly. According to the research done by Prof. Mujibur Rahman Khan, head of the Plant Protection Department of MU, the yield has also decreased by 20 to 25 percent. He has also mentioned 1121, 1509 and 1692 varieties in his research.

what is bakkani disease

Prof. Mujibur Rahman Khan said that in Bakani disease, the stems of the plant become very long. Its leaves turn yellow. The plants affected by the disease often appear thin, hence it is also called flag disease. Due to weak stems, they bend and fall. The grains in the ears dry up or become thin. The quality decreases.

What should farmers do?

Prof. Mujibur Rahman Khan said that farmers should prevent this at the stage of sowing seeds or planting saplings. Before planting, the roots of the plant should be immersed in a solution of carbendazim, benomyl or thiophanate-methyl for 6 to 8 hours. You can also dip it in a solution of carbendazim or trichoderma. If this is done, 90 percent of the crops will not suffer from this disease. Spray a solution of propiconazole, tebuconazole, penconazole, flutriafol or triazole on the leaves.
